So, how do you get started asking the right questions of the therapist and counselors who say they provide Marriage therapy and find the one that is right for you.

One way truly successful couples find a qualified and expert therapist is to have a list of questions they ask all of the therapists they interview before selecting someone for the job.

This eBook provides the framework for a casual conversation by phone with the therapist or if you are emailing you can use the questions to gather the necessary information to make your decision.

Included are a broad range of questions, some of which may not be appropriate based on your needs, however the questions and insights that follow provide you with a rich source of material to choose the topics that fit your needs. The choice is yours.

Whether you opt for the full formal list or just keep all these things in mind you will have a clear understanding of what your relationship counseling needs are.  You will then be able to ask the right questions so you can determine which therapist can best meet those needs.

Here are some key topics to help you start the selection process of choosing an expert therapist that can truly deliver these important attributes:

Common Questions Couples Ask About Choosing a Couples/Marriage Counselor.

3.  A Personalized Plan To Help.

When we do the right assessments and use the right research based models we really do know what a successful therapy plan for you will look like.   You can decide to learn to grow and heal, even deepen the relationship you have.  Each couple receives a personalized plan for how that transformation is going to take place.

You deserve to try everything to help grow and heal your relationship.

I will never tell you to get a divorce, every couple must have the chance to benefit for the right therapies.

5.  Long Term Results

We now know that with the right methods and the consistent participation that couples do get better, even affair couples.    Don't believe the myths or the worries of family and friends. Couples come to therapy, they get better and they keep getting better for years after therapy.

You do need the right help and the right methods and that is why you are looking for help? I have the tools and the focus to help create lasting change in your relationship.

Here are some of the things to know when researching the right type of counseling and the right methods.  It is important that couples receive the right kind of therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy with Attachment Based Methods are considered the very best care for couples.

The counseling community is like the medical community but also a bit different.  For example, doctors go to medical school and when they graduate, if they would like to be a pediatrician, OB GYN or cardiologist they go on to receive specialty training before they ever think to try and help people with Heart Issues, etc.  This is what we call going to a specialist.

Well, in the counseling community there are two extremes of which to be aware.  On one end we have relationship coaches who are not required to have any training, education, or licenses…...so anyone can call themselves a coach.  On the other end there are professional counselors and therapists like me who have a degree, supervision, continuing education, licenses and governed by state licensing divisions.

It is up to the counselor or therapist the state says to “refer the couple on to a trained professional if they don’t FEEL like they  can help someone.  Herein lie the troubles.  Counselors are wonderful people who want to help.  They sometimes, like you, don’t know what they don’t know.  They also need clients so the tendency might be to try really hard to see everybody.

The general counselor will see kids, seniors, 10 different individual issues and then put two folks in the room to talk and call it couples counseling.  What happens is they try to use the same methods they use on individuals and every other issue they see.  This may be why couples are very nervous to go to counseling.  Many go just a time or two and feel they, the couple, have failed.  When in fact, perhaps they didn’t really receive the best treatment.

That is why I decided it was best to focus on this one important area for people.  Honestly, I didn’t want to be a jack of all trades.  I wanted to give my clients expert specialized care with the training and skills necessary to help couples succeed in the area of improving their couple and their intimacy.

I'm trained as a certified sex therapist so that I can help you with the dynamics of your relationship. I also can help you with the repair to the very intimate parts of your relationship that lack of communication, intimacy troubles or affairs can affect.

We want to address any negative cycles that were going on and handle any issues that require intimate repair because of those negative cycles.  I don’t want you leaving therapy and ever going back to the way things were.  You can get through this but, I want you to know we are going to work to help you never  let it get that bad again.  I will help you get better and stay better.

The reason I see results is because I use the very best research based methods and provide specialty care. You will see a difference very early on and if you follow my plan for you. You will increase your success exponentially.  Research says that 75-80% of couples will see a dramatic improvement in 15-20 hours.

We know that the research surrounding the right methods shows that 90% of the couples maintain their improvement even 3 years after they finish.

You want it to work. This is important to you. That's why when you make this investment in your relationship and family, I devote all of my time and specialty training to help you. You want THIS  to SOLVE  your relationship concerns.

I am the only therapist between St. Louis County and Kansas City, Missouri that exclusively focuses on couple and intimacy healing.  This really helps save relationships.

8. HOW DOES INSURANCE WORK?

Q: Does insurance cover couples counseling?

Typically insurance companies do not offer marriage counseling or couples counseling as a benefit of your plan.  Therapists are required to give people a diagnosis of a mental illness to use their medical insurance.  As you can imagine there is not a couple on the planet that could not benefit from healing and growing their relationship over a lifetime together.

Q: My insurance company says they will cover couples counseling. What do I do?

Should your insurance company tell you they will help cover the cost of the therapy then they are considering me an out of network provider.  I will provide you with a “Superbill” upon payment for therapy. You will then send this along to your insurance company to see what they will reimburse you.

Q: Do you take HSAs or HRA cards?

Yes. Typically, they work just fine. When you look at the card it usually has a major credit card company like Visa or MasterCard endorsing it. You should be able to use it when setting your appointments with us.

Q: Do you work with Employee Assistance Providers?

EAP typically gives you 2-6 hours to meet with the therapist.  The program that we offer does not fit within the model of the EAP and again marriage therapy is not effective unless we use the right methods and the right specialty.

9.  What Is The Schedule Like?

Our hours are between 9 am and 5:30pm weekdays.    Couples ask about evening and weekends and we do have a special way that couples can schedule intense focus even if they are challenged by the daytime schedule of regular professional hours.

 10.  What if I have a trip coming up, or I am not sure I can commit to coming every week? Should I wait until after I get back from the trip and my calendar is clear to set our first appointment?

For most couples it is crucial for you to start as soon as possible. You don't always know how checked out of the relationship your partner truly is....probably because communication has not been good  lately as it is. If they just said yes to counseling, and then you wait to set an appointment, you could seriously be in trouble. It's best to get started and then work out the schedule later.

 11. What if I have more questions?

Hopefully this video answered many of your questions but you are welcome to contact us by phone between the hours of 9am and 5pm.   If you need more detailed information for your situation you may leave a message for me to email or call you back.

12.   Is there anything available other then week to week appointments?

You are busy. Life is busy.  Some couples know they cannot put this off any longer without risking the breakup of their family, yet they travel and are gone for large portions of time.  In these special cases couples may schedule a Couple Retreat on a Saturday and or Sunday for 6 hour blocks to get a jumpstart on calming the crisis and beginning the repair.  Now these are exceptional situations and this is offered at a time the therapist is normally not in the  office so of course these services are offered at a Premium Cost compared to our weekly visits.

Time is extremely limited as I am the only practice in our state just focused on couples. Get scheduled here:
